The Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, PC, CC, CMM, COM, CD served as the twenty-sixth Governor General of Canada (1999–2005).

For me, Ontario is Georgian Bay. This is the place that has the oldest exposed rocks in the world — 1.8 billion years old. They are the roots of what was once a mountain range as high as the Himalayas, stretching down the length of North America. When you lie on them, to look at the Perseid showers of stars in the middle of August, or are startled by the play of the Northern Lights, you realize that you are in a timeless and ageless world. Once, we saw the entire bowl of Heaven dancing with the lights from the centre, which appeared like a large hovering bird, the atmosphere alive and electric with vibrations and streams of light like no other. This is the gift to those of us who are fortunate enough to live in this magical place.

Pour moi, l’Ontario c’est la baie Georgienne. C’est l’endroit où l’on retrouve les rochers exposés considérés comme étant les plus vieux au monde, soit 1,8 milliard d’années. Ils sont les fondements de ce qui était anciennement une chaîne de montagnes aussi hautes que l’Himalaya et qui s’étendait vers le sud tout le long de l’Amérique du Nord. Lorsqu’on s’allonge sur ces rochers pour regarder les pluies d’étoiles filantes des Perséides au milieu du mois d’août ou qu’on se retrouve stupéfait par les jeux de lumière des aurores boréales, on constate à quel point notre monde est intemporel. Une fois, nous avons vu les cieux en entier danser avec des lumières qui jaillissaient du centre, ressemblant à un gigantesque oiseau en vol stationnaire, avec l’atmosphère vivante et électrisée de vibrations et de faisceaux lumineux incomparables. C’est l’offrande du ciel faite à ceux qui ont la chance d’habiter cet endroit tout à fait magique.
