Highlights from the Adrienne Clarkson Prize for Global Citizenship

The Adrienne Clarkson Prize for Global Citizenship was presented to Lieutenant-General (ret) The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire on September 25, 2019.

General Dallaire served as Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda in 1994. Against orders to retreat, he stayed to save as many as he could and bear witness to the genocide that saw nearly one million people killed.

After experiencing the violence and tragedy in Rwanda, General Dallaire has committed his life to advocating for peace. “I believe that one day, we will not result to slaughtering each other because of our differences,” said General Dallaire, “We will be able to recognize that we are all equal.…That there isn’t any of us that is more human than the other.”

The evening closed with a moving rendition of “Hallelujah” by Rufus Wainwright, accompanied by the Wexford Gleeks.
